The Best Essential Oils for Spring Cleaning

It is that time of year when the weather starts to get nice, we air out the house and do a bit of a deeper clean. I love this time of year, the fresh air and everything feels new again. To get the stagnant, dustiness and stuffy air in your house to fresh without the chemical smell can be easy. This post will cover the Best Essential Oils for Spring Cleaning your house. Not only will your house be cleaner than ever but smell fabulous, no chemicals. I will cover which oils are best and some easy cleaning product recipes.

Let’s dive right in to which essential oils work best for which tasks.

Cleaning Surfaces

For everyday cleaning or the more deeper cleans a couple times a year, you need a good all purpose cleaning solution. By this I mean a solution that will cut through dirt, fingerprints, food debris, and build up. Your main purpose of a cleaning solution is to clean. Cleaning and disinfecting are typically two different tasks. As you will see below you want your disinfectant to work by allowing it to dry. So you would have to clean the surface first anyway. Your cleaning solution can have disinfecting and antibacterial properties but for true disinfecting you will still need to disinfect after.

Some good essential oils for cleaning are Lavender, citrus(includes Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Bergamot, Sweet Orange), Peppermint, Tea Tree, Lemongrass, Geranium and Rosemary.

Cleaning Solution

Here is a recipe for an effective non toxic all purpose cleaner:

Here is what you will need:

  • 16oz glass spray bottle, you can also mix in a bucket if you are cleaning with a rag & bucket
  • Distilled water
  • Distilled/White Vinegar
  • Castile Soap
  • Essential oils of your choice

Mix 2 tablespoons vinegar, 2 tablespoons of castile soap, 20 – 25 drops of essential oils, Fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water. Add the water slowly as to not create too many bubbles or add castile soap last. Replace nozzle. Shake well. To use spray on surface to clean and wipe.

  • You can also use this solution on floors. If you have hardwood floors omit using the vinegar.

Disinfecting Surfaces

With going through the recent pandemic disinfecting surfaces is more important than ever. We have all been bleaching and spraying everything we can get our hands on. Now is the time to properly disinfect all surfaces without burning your insides or skin. There are a number of essential oils that work as disinfectants and antibacterial. * Note disinfectants do not clean surfaces from dirt, you need to clean surfaces before disinfecting. The recipe below is for a disinfecting spray that you spray and do not wipe off.

The best disinfecting essential oils to name a few are lemon, clove, tea tree, peppermint, lavender, orange, cinnamon and thyme. You can use these solo or blend them with other essential oils to achieve a desired smell, more disinfecting or additional effects.

Disinfecting Solution/Spray

Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • 16oz glass spray bottle, when working with essential oils it is always best to use glass.
  • Alcohol, 70%+ isopropyl alcohol(rubbing alcohol) approximately 14 oz.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/2 teaspoon
  • Essential oils: 30 drops tea tree, 15 drops lemon, 15 drops lavender, 15 drops eucalyptus

Fill bottle with alcohol leaving room for other ingredients. Add 1/2 teaspoon hydrogen peroxide and the essential oils. Shake well. Spray on surfaces to be disinfected and allow to dry. If using on harder to reach surfaces or areas you do not want these ingredients to touch, spray on cloth first then wipe that surface. To check out this recipe in further detail click here.

Cleaning Glass & Mirrors

Continuing with the Best Essential Oils for Spring Cleaning you need a good glass and mirror cleaner. When your windows are clean and streak free, the whole room just feels cleaner. I struggle with this one as a dog owner whose dog loves to sit in the window. It’s hard to keep clean. Streak free clear windows are such a clean statement.

I have 2 different recipes (very similar except for one ingredient)that I go back and forth with. Both are good. It seems one works better for me in cooler weather. They both work so well that no matter when I use them, I spray the window and think oh this window isn’t that dirty – then I look at the paper towel. These recipes seem to get dirt off the glass that regular glass cleaners just miss.

Glass & Mirror Spray

Here is what you will need:

  • 16oz glass spray bottle, when working with essential oils it is always best to use glass.
  • Alcohol, 70%+ isopropyl alcohol(rubbing alcohol)
  • Distilled Vinegar
  • Distilled Water
  • Cornstarch 1 tablespoon(optional)
  • Essential oils: 15 – 20 drops

In the bottle mix 4oz white vinegar, 4 oz. isopropyl alcohol and 4 oz distilled water then add your essential oil of choice. I prefer Lemongrass, Lavender or a citrus blend. If you are adding the cornstarch, I add it after the first ingredient. It is much easier to mix around. After all ingredients are added shake well and replace nozzle. To use: spray surface and wipe or spray cloth and wipe.

Dusting

Good furniture should be cared for, heck even if you do not have expensive furniture if you take care of it, it will last you longer. The chemicals in store bought cleaners are harsh on furniture. They are also harsh on our respiratory systems. Citrus essential oils work great for dusting wood furniture. Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Sweet Orange are all good options. Citrus essential oils are natural degreasers. These powerhouse essential oils will cut through dirt, grime grease and build up on furniture. Added benefit: the citrus scent brings a positive uplifting effect.

Dusting Spray Recipe

This dusting spray works great with just a few ingredients. It is very effective, smells greats and extremely cost efficient.

Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • 16oz glass spray bottle, when working with essential oils it is always best to use glass.
  • White vinegar, vinegar is great for cleaning. It cuts through dirt and can even help repel dust.(You can omit if needed)
  • Fractionated coconut oil, FCO is great for attracting & trapping dust. It is also a good wood conditioner.
  • Essential oil of your choice, whichever citrus you prefer. You can also get creative and blend.
  • Distilled Water, using distilled water prolongs the life of your spray and makes it easier to work with.

Mix in bottle 1 cup(8 oz.) distilled water add 1/2 cup (4 oz.) white vinegar, 1/4 cup(2 oz.) fractionated coconut oil and 30 – 32 drops of essential oil. Shake well. To use: Shake well before and during use. Spray lightly on furniture or on cloth and wipe. Works best if using a microfiber cloth.

Soft Surface Cleaning

Just like your hard surfaces, your soft surfaces need cleaning too. Things like your couches, chairs, drapes, carpet. All of these you can get professionally steam cleaned but doing that once a week, even once a month can be pricey. A list of the Best Essential Oils for Spring Cleaning wouldn’t be complete without a Refresher. By using a soft surface refresher spray, it brings fresh life to those big items we use daily. I use it a couple times a week on the drapes, pillows and carpets. It really does freshen them up between cleanings and the ingredients are antibacterial, antimicrobial and smell great! This has to be the item I use the most. I use it daily on my bed pillows and bed. I also use it daily on the couch pillows and dog blankets. It is a nice refresher between laundering.

Soft Surface/Fabric Refresher Spray

Here is what you will need for my favorite Refresher Spray:

  • 16oz glass spray bottle, when working with essential oils it is always best to use glass.
  • Baking Soda – neutralizes odors and deodorizes
  • Unscented Witch Hazel – sanitizes, evaporates quickly and gentler than alcohol
  • Essential oil of your choice, there are many antibacterial essential oils to choose from. Get creative and blend.
  • Distilled Water

Add a couple ounces of distilled water to bottle. Then add 2 tablespoons of baking soda. It is easier to dissolve when less full. Now add 4 ounces of witch hazel and 30 drops of antibacterial essential oils. My favorite original blend was Lavender, Frankincense and Eucalyptus. After using so often I tweaked it to be better around pets so I swapped out the Eucalyptus for Chamomile. I like the new scent it is fresh and calming. After adding your essential oils fill the rest of your bottle with distilled water. Shake well before using. I even spray this on my pillows and blankets when making my bed daily, it gives that fresh just washed feel every night when getting into bed.

Bonus Section

This section is for the ideas I had that deserved their own section. I couldn’t talk about the Best Essential Oils for Spring Cleaning without bringing up this gem of a task. This one will fill your house with a great smell. Since this is the time that we start opening and leaving our windows open, try this. After cleaning the inside of your window sills wipe them with your favorite essential oil scent. Now with the window open, every time the wind blows you will get the scent of fresh and your favorite scent wafting through your home. Or this is what I do – I make a mixture of a little coconut oil, witch hazel and essential oils. I dab the mix on the window screens, the wind blows through the screens and my house smells wonderful. Today I used Cherry Blossom, Jasmine and Lavender – divine!

Here is another little bonus for you. Want your carpets to smell like your favorite scent? Rub a little essential oil of your choice on the brush bristles of your vacuum roller. It will not be an over powering scent just a hint. As the roller spins and the bristles rub against...

22 Too Cool Things You Can Do With Ice Molds

Who Knew Ice Could Be So Cool!

Normally I am writing about essential oils but with everyone staying home more now and the holidays coming I thought I would dust off an old post and revive it. See how many of the 22 Too Cool Things You Can do With Ice Molds you can do or if you can think of more.

Inviting Effects is reader supported. When you buy through links on this site I may earn a small commission. Thank you.

Here are 22 Cool Things You Can Do With Ice Molds. And you thought ice cube molds were only for ice, think again. Silicone Ice Molds can do so much more. The only limitation is your own creativity. Here are all the things I came up.

1. Flavored Ice Balls/Cubes

Here are just a few ideas to flavor your ice: freeze milk or cream cubes for your iced coffee, freeze lemonade balls for your iced tea or orange juice cubes for your vodka.

2. Frozen Juice Balls/Cubes

Freeze your favorite juice in the molds for the best tasting ice cubes. Add a stick or natural reusable Bamboo Straw for a mini frozen treat. Kids and adults alike will love these.

3. Chocolates & Chocolate Pops

Melt your favorite chocolate(I always add a pat of coconut oil when melting chocolate – for smoothness) , pour into molds . Add some nuts, jimmies, coconut or candies and let cool/harden . You have now made your own personalized chocolates. Place a straw or stick in before hardening and you have a pop.

4. Freeze Fresh Herbs in Olive Oil or Water

This is one of my favorites, as I prefer the taste of fresh herbs. I do this in the fall to the herbs in my garden so I have the great taste all winter and spring. I also do this when I buy an herb from the store. The bunches are always larger than what the recipe calls for so I freeze the leftovers. Wash the herb, place in ice mold and fill with water or olive oil. After they are frozen remove and place in label Ziploc freezer bags. Use in recipes as desired. If you are making spaghetti sauce just drop in the oregano cube for the fresh herb taste that makes all dishes better. I use water in some and olive oil in the others. For recipes that you want the fresh herbs but not the oil.

Jogger Sets

5. Bone Broth

Make individual sized serving of your daily dose of bone broth. Bone broth has many health benefits. Many people drink bone broth daily. Now you can make or buy your bone broth and freeze into daily servings in your ice molds. This will save you time and money.

6. Baby Food Cubes

Making your own baby food is so much better and convenient. Freeze into cubes for perfect serving sizes for your little one. Simply make your food, pour into Silicone Ice Mold tray and freeze. After frozen transfer to dated and labeled freezer bags. Since you want the best for your baby and make your baby’s food, why not save your self time and money by freezing into baby sized servings.

7. Gravy Cubes

Gravy cubes are a great way to save leftover gravy. If you ever just had a craving for mashed potatoes and wished you had gravy but settles for butter, now you have an option. It’s also great for when you make things like meatloaf that typically don’t yield enough juices to make a gravy. Simply pour gravy into ice molds freeze then transfer to labeled freezer bags.

8. Sauce Cubes

You can do the same for sauces that you do with gravy. Now you can have individual servings of Pesto, Spaghetti sauce, even cheesy mac and cheese sauce. I find it tastes much better to make fresh pasta and use the sauce cubes. Now just because you are cooking for one or two, doesn’t mean you have to do a boxed or frozen dinner.

9. Fruit Cubes

Freeze your favorite berries or fruits in ice. Your drink will be chilled but now when the ice melts you will have a treat to eat. This tasty ice has an added benefit of infusing your ice but also your drink as the ice melts. Perfect for your infused water bottles.

10. Edible Flower Balls/Cubes

Not only are edible flower cubes/balls beautiful but the edible flowers also have many health benefits. Place the flower in the Silicone Ice Mold add water and freeze. This small step will have your guests thinking you have thought of everything.

11. Frozen Pet Treats

I can’t discuss 22 Too Cool Things You Can Do With Ice Molds without including pets.  On the hot summer days what could be more fun for your pet than to have the coolness of an ice cube and the reward of a treat. They can have both when you freeze some of their treats in the ice mold. My dog had a blast with it – so determined to get to those treats.

12. Coffee Cubes

Freeze your left over coffee into coffee cubes. Add them to your iced coffee drinks – they will not give your drink the watered down taste that regular ice does. Or pop a coffee cube into a glass of Bailey Irish Cream. For true coffee fans I am sure your creativity will find many other uses for the coffee cubes.

13. Cookie Dough Cubes

Perfect solution to binge cookie eating. I know when I bake cookies I eat at least 3 – 4, while I am still baking! Sometimes you just want a warm fresh baked cookie. If you make the cookie dough and freeze it in the Silicone Ice Molds you can have a warm fresh from the oven cookie or two any time your craving strikes.

14. Wine Cubes/Balls

Are you a wine drinker? Do you like ice in your wine but dislike how it waters down your wine and changes the flavor? Take left over wine or fresh wine and make wine cubes. Place the wine balls in your glass to enjoy your wine without being watered down.

15. Alcohol Cubes

This is an ideas that can create some creative cocktails. Freeze some Irish Cream and add to a glass of Kahlua. The only drawback on this one is only lower proof alcohol will freeze and it does take longer to freeze.

17. Egg White Cubes

Egg white cubes can help with waste. When baking and a recipe calls for a yolk normally the white ends up in the garbage. Now when a recipe calls for an egg white, you are on it by pulling one out of the freezer.

18. Jell-O Balls

What could be more fun than balls of Jell-O? Possibly individual Jell-O cubes. Prepare Jell-O as directed and pour into ice molds to chill and set. Want even more fun – add fruit or adults maybe a little alcohol.

19. Pancake Cubes

The next time you make pancake batter, make a little extra. Anytime you crave a pancake or two just pull a couple from the freezer to make. Quick, easy and no batter mess. This would also work for waffles or crepe batter too.

20. Cake Bites/Tiny Tops

By using the cube mold you get a perfect little petite personal cakes. Just the right size. Or if you use just the bottom half of the ball mold it bakes up to a nice small muffin top, which everyone knows is the best part. Silicone molds can withstand heat up to 420 degrees, so normal baking temps are fine. Just remember to spray the mold with cooking spray before. Let molds completely cool before removing cakes.

21. Smoothie Cubes

This is a real time saver, especially when you have those morning when you are running late. Make your smoothie as normal then pour into molds. Freeze overnight then transfer to freezer bag. Now in the morning take a cube or two, let thaw for about 5 minutes then put in a blender with some filtered water.

22. Mini Meat Loaves

They are all the rage – mini meatloaves. Now you can make perfect sized, perfect formed meat loaves. What is nice amount this size is it helps with portion control. Just mix up your meat, egg, bread crumbs etc. press down into mold and bake. When finished baking, let cool for a few minutes then pop out of mold. Top with ketchup or barbecue sauce – YUM! Remember with baking the Silicone Ice Molds they withstand heat to 420 degrees so cooking your loaves at 350 degrees will work great.

I hope you enjoyed 22 Cool Things You Can Do With Ice Molds. Now that there are so many wonderful things to do and...

The Smell of the Holidays – 5 Essential Oil Blends

A smell/scent can recall memories from our past as well as be a part of making new memories. Our sense of smell is such a powerful sense. Through our sense of smell we can associate and experience both positive and negative emotions as well as state of mind. Hopefully, The Smell of the Holidays and the 5 Essential Oil Blends will bring you fond memories.

Holiday Smells

When we smell sugar cookies baking, crisp air with a hint of snow coming or the smell of a fresh cut pine we often think of the holiday season. The diffuser blends I will be sharing will be reminiscent of a traditional family Christmas. So if your family tradition is roasting a pig on the grill on the beach for the holidays these blends may not bring back those memories. Don’t worry, if you have a different tradition and you would like a blend that would match that – contact me. We can always mix something together.

The recipes for the essential oils blends that I am sharing are based on my medium sized diffuser and the size of my living room. You can adjust the amount of essential oils you add based on your own diffuser and area. Always keep in mind the essential oils you use around small children, pregnant women and pets.  Many of the holiday scents that contain peppermint, cinnamon and pine should not be used around dogs.

Being the big dog person I am I avoid those blends or I adjust the recipe. I do 2 below that will work with dogs.

O Christmas Tree

Nothing says Christmas like the smell of of a fresh cut Christmas tree. To learn the history behind the Christmas tree click here. I have two versions of this recipe one dog friendly and one regular. I have a dog and a fake tree so I like this recipe when I am decorating for the holiday. The dog friendly version is not as close as the regular version but close enough when your priority is the safety of your pet.

Candy Cane Diffuser Blend

Although most of us have mint year round, when it is shaped like I cane our minds go to the holidays. In fact the first candy canes were not shaped like a cane but a stick, were white and only flavored with sugar. To learn more about the origin of the candy cane click here.

Crisp Air

You know that smell in the air when it’s cold and you can smell that snow is coming? To me that is the smell of the season, crisp cold fresh air. Taking a walk in the park or the woods with that brisk clean air is just invigorating. That is what this blend does for me. It could be the Bergamot, which I call the happy essential oil, but it makes me smile.

Egg Nog

The Smell of the Holidays would not be complete without Egg Nog. Nothing says the holidays better than Egg Nog. I remember as a child, we always had a carton in the refrigerator during the holidays. At the time I thought it was a little heavy but it was the taste of Christmas. Then when I was in high school I went to a friends house and tried her mom’s homemade egg nog – with ice cream in it! I was hooked on it. How could this drink that reminded me of the best time of year get any better? Ice cream made it even better. I wish I had that recipe now that my appreciation for the little things has grown so. Now just thinking about it, I think I need to do a little research.

Midnight Mass

Those of you that grew up going to church remember midnight mass on Christmas Eve. This blend will definitely bring back those memories for you. This blend is pet friendly. For me personally it is not a blend I can diffuse all day and night. I have a limited tolerance for it. I think that is brings me back to childhood and going to midnight mass, where I was always sleepy.

Animal Print

Happy Holiday Memories!

I hope these blends of The Smell of the Holidays – 5 Essential Oil Blends bring some happy memories to you. I have a few other holiday blends that I do not use very often such as Pumpkin Pie and Sugar Cookie. I think I don’t use them for two reasons. One reason is they make me hungry for pie and cookies. The other reason is that the true blends of these two are not pet friendly. If you are interested in either one, drop me a comment or email and I will share the blends.

If you don’t have a diffuser, no hum bug here there are alternative ways to enjoy the blends. Check the how to use section of previous post here.

DIY Natural Mattress Spray

Sleep Better With A Fresh & Clean Mattress

Why wasn’t I doing this sooner? I used to work for a commercial cleaning company doing inspections – so I know what is out there. But I thought, I am clean – well things can always be cleaner and fresher. That is what this Mattress Spray will do.

What is Lurking in Your Mattress?

There are a number of common unpleasant things you are sleeping with every night. No, I am not referring to your partner. I am referring to all the nasty things in/on your mattress.

Let’s start with ALLERGENS. Allergens would be something that can cause an allergic reaction in you. Common ones would be dust mites, dead skin cells from pets, bugs/insects. These can all lead to allergies and/or asthma.

Speaking of pet dead skin cells lets move to human DEAD SKIN CELLS. Humans shed 30, 000 to 40, 000 skin cells every day. That’s a nice thought when we think about our skin rejuvenating and looking fresh. It is a disgusting thought when we think where do those skin cells go. A large amount of those skin cells will end up in our bedding and mattress.

What's the Deal With Night Sweats Under 40?

To mix with that, SWEAT and a lot of it ends up in our mattress. I don’t know about you but just sleeping – I am a sweater sleeper! The heat and sweat can make for a perfect environment for bacteria.

BACTERIA is yet another nasty lurking in our mattresses. Drooling, accidents – bodily fluids – need I say more?

FOOD can end up in our bedding. Even those who do not eat in bed you can unknowingly transfer crumbs there. Eating a snack in your jammies or wearing socks to bed that you have walked through the house with can do it. These crumbs can provide food for microorganisms and bacteria.

CHEMICALS in my mattress – say it isn’t so. If you were aware of this when mattress shopping and purchased a natural/organic mattress – I applaud you. I definitely will next time. For those of us that didn’t, here are some of the chemicals that can be lurking in your mattress. Flame retardants, formaldehyde, and benzene have been found in some mattresses.

Finally, I will bring up FUNGAL SPORES. These are can appear in synthetic and feather type bedding.

What I do to limit the nastiness that can lurk in a mattress?

DIY Natural Mattress Spray

While this spray can’t cure everything. This Natural Spray will absorb odors, deter dust mites and bacteria. And the process after the spray will eliminate a number of the other nasties too.

This mattress spray is so easy to make and is all natural. I love essential oils and the positive uses and effects of them. To make the MATTRESS SPRAY you will need the following:

  • Distilled Water
  • White Vinegar
  • Essential Oils – Lavender, Eucalyptus & Peppermint
  • Spray Bottle(preferably glass)
  • Label to adhere to bottle

Why these ingredients?

Eucalyptus oil contains substances that kill bacteria. It also may kill some viruses and fungi. It is a disinfectant with a fresh clean smell.

Lavender oil contains antibiotic, antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial and deodorizing properties with a beautiful relaxing scent.

Peppermint oil is a pest deterrent, surface cleaner and air freshener. It also can be used as an antiseptic because it helps reduce bacteria, fungus and microorganisms.

White vinegar (Acetic acid) can destroy some bacteria and viruses as well as act as a disinfectant.

Natural Mattress Spray Recipe:

1 cup Distilled Water

1 cup White Vinegar

8 drops each of Lavender, Eucalyptus, Peppermint

Add to spray bottle and shake.

Here is the best way I found to use the spray. Remove all sheets and pillows from your bed. Spray the entire mattress. Let dry. This works great as the mattress has time to fully dry while your sheets are in the wash. After the mattress has dried vacuum the mattress. You can use the vacuum attachment hose or I just hoist the upright on the mattress and do a thorough vacuuming. This step is very important as you are vacuuming up all the dust mites, skin cells etc.

When the mattress is dry and vacuuming has been completed – make your bed and enjoy a wonderful nights sleep!

Watch for my upcoming sleepy time essential oil sprays.

What Benefits Can I Experience From Shower Steamers?

Aromatherapy is the practice of using the natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical well-being. Essential oils consist of tiny aromatic molecules that are readily absorbed via the skin, and whilst breathing they enter the lungs. These therapeutic particles next enter the bloodstream and are carried around the body where they can deliver their beneficial healing powers and are said to promote whole-body healing
Aromatherapy is the inhalation and application of essential oils. They are said to enhance physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Essential oils have the highest frequency of any known natural substance. Through the process of entrainment the oils higher frequency will raise the vibratory quality of that individual.
When a person inhales an essential oil, that scent is carried by olfactory nerve cells in the nose to the olfactory system which sends the aroma to the brain. Our sense of smell is 10,000 times more powerful than any other sense and is immediate. Smell is the strongest link to our subconscious mind.
Essential oils have the highest frequencies of any natural substance. Pure grade essential oils range in frequency from 52 to 580 MHz. A healthy body, typically has a frequency ranging from 62 to 78 MHz, disease begins at 57 MHz.
